As a tree grows out of the soil, so our roots are in our homeland of Aotearoa New Zealand. But also a tree will grow out and upwards, and so we must travel our work to the world, exchanging performances and cultural interactions with an international populace, entangling our branches with other plants and shrubbery.

Everything begins somewhere, in this case the company was founded in 2001 by New Zealand writer and performer Jo Randerson.

As no two snowflakes are alike, we treasure the unique abilities of all the individuals who form Barbarian. Every show is tailored around the actors within it, and we are infinitely proud to perform with some of New Zealand's most distinctive and unusual stage personalities.
